Blood smears are done to examine both red and white blood cells microscopically for abnormalities, and are used to diagnose anemias, liver disease, vitamin or other nutritional deficiencies, lead poisoning, or inherited blood diseases. Various stains are also used to help to further narrow down the disease for a more accurate diagnosis.
